Overthinking is not simply a bad habit, nor does it mean that we think more deeply than everyone else. Often, it is the mind’s attempt to reduce uncertainty, regain a sense of control, and protect us from fear or difficult emotions. Yet the more we replay the same scenarios, conversations, and possibilities, the more we become caught in a cycle of anxiety and self-doubt. What begins as an attempt to find certainty can end up taking us further away from inner calm, clarity, and trust in ourselves.
The way out is not to fight our thoughts, but to change our relationship with them. When we stop treating every thought as an unquestionable truth and learn to return our attention to the body, the breath, and the present moment, we create space for greater clarity and less inner noise. Real wisdom does not come from analysing everything endlessly. It comes from learning to notice what the mind is doing without feeling compelled to follow every thought that passes through it. Not every train that arrives at the station is one we have to board.
