We do not need to know someone personally for them to become part of our personal story. Through a parasocial relationship, a public figure can acquire a familiar and emotionally meaningful presence in our lives, even though the relationship itself is one-sided. This connection can become particularly powerful with musicians, whose songs accompany deeply personal experiences\u2014love, heartbreak, friendships, celebrations, loneliness, migration, and difficult periods of life. Over time, we become attached not only to the artist, but also to what they represent and to the memories associated with their work. Music is strongly connected to autobiographical memory, which means that the death of a beloved artist can unexpectedly reconnect us with earlier versions of ourselves, people we once loved, relationships that ended, and periods of life that can never quite be revisited. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grief following the death of a public figure may also become a form of disenfranchised grief\u2014a loss that others do not necessarily recognise as sufficiently personal or legitimate to mourn. Yet the emotional significance of a relationship is not determined solely by whether two people actually knew one another; it is also shaped by the place that person, their voice, or their work occupied in our inner world. Returning to their music, sharing memories, talking with others who feel similarly, or participating in collective farewells can become meaningful ways of processing the loss and creating continuity between past and present. Sometimes, then, we are not grieving only the artist who has died. We are also grieving what they symbolised, the memories they carried, the passage of time, and a part of our own lives that existed alongside their music. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
