In romantic relationships, it may emerge when we feel that the special place we hold in the life of someone important to us is under threat. The deeper the connection becomes, the more there is that we may fear losing. Our need to belong, to feel significant, and to know that our bond has a unique value can lie beneath many experiences of jealousy. Yet this does not mean that the perceived threat is always real: the emotion tells us that something feels threatening, not that a genuine threat necessarily exists.

Behind “I’m jealous,” there may therefore be far more vulnerable questions: “Am I still important to you?” “Am I losing my place in your life?” “Could someone else replace me?” From a systemic perspective, what matters is learning to understand and translate jealousy rather than allowing it to become suspicion, blame, possessiveness, or control. Relationships also need clearly communicated boundaries, because uniqueness and exclusivity are not the same thing. Perhaps, then, the quality of a relationship is not determined by whether jealousy ever appears, but by what two people do when it does: whether they can turn it into communication rather than control, vulnerability rather than accusation, and an opportunity to reconnect rather than move further apart.

The full article was originally published on the Psychology Portal – Psychology.gr.

Related services

You can read more about related services:

                    Individual Therapy

                    Couples Therapy

                    Family Therapy

[301,310,306
579,578,582,581,580,569,557
post-10866","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-self-awareness-and-personal-development","category-psychology-of-everyday-life","category-relationships-and-communication","tag-fear-of-loss","tag-jealousy","tag-relationship-boundaries","tag-romantic-jealousy","tag-romantic-relationships-2","tag-sense-of-belonging","tag-systems-theory-2
["GET
