When a relationship between a parent and an adult child breaks down, the impact often spreads across the wider family system, affecting siblings, grandparents, relatives, partners, and long-standing relational balances. Cutting contact may initially feel protective or relieving, particularly when there have been repeated boundary violations, chronic disappointment, emotional neglect, or traumatic experiences. Yet it often leaves behind unresolved grief, anger, pain, and questions that continue to resurface. The picture becomes even more complex because each person carries their own version of what happened, while older wounds and intergenerational patterns may strongly influence how family members relate to one another.

Healing does not necessarily mean reconciliation, nor does it require returning to the relationship as it once was. It may begin when the rupture no longer dominates a person’s identity and inner life, when there is room for more complex emotions, and when the other person can be seen not only through the harm they caused, but also as someone shaped by their own history, limitations, and wounds. Therapy, grief work, clearer boundaries, and taking responsibility for one’s own part in the dynamic can open the way either towards a more mature form of reconnection or towards inner peace when reconciliation is not possible. The goal is not always to restore the family to what it was, but to create a different way of relating or when that cannot happen, a different way of carrying the story without remaining trapped inside it.

The full article was originally published on the Psychology Portal – Psychology.gr.

Related services

You can read more about related services:

                    Family Therapy

                    Parent Counseling

                    Couples Therapy

                    Individual Therapy

                    Greeks Living Abroad and Migration

Family estrangement is never simply a matter between two people.
