Why Do We Feel Like Children Again Around Our Parents? Love, Guilt, and Old Roles That Return

The holidays often bring back far more than memories. They can reactivate old family roles, guilt, expectations, and patterns of behaviour we thought we had long outgrown. An adult who feels independent and confident in everyday life may suddenly find themselves slipping back into the role of the “good child” once they return to the family home: the one who does not disappoint, who takes care of everyone else, avoids conflict, or tries to keep the peace. This does not necessarily mean weakness or regression. It reflects familiar systemic dynamics being reactivated through places, smells, tones of voice, and family expectations that are deeply connected to the past. This is why the guilt behind thoughts such as “I should go,” “they’ll be hurt,” or “it’s my duty” may have less to do with love itself and more to do with a role that was formed long before the adult self had the freedom to choose differently.

Meaningful change does not require cutting off from family, nor does it mean automatically following old expectations. It means reclaiming a sense of choice and becoming aware of the role we tend to step into whenever we return. Small, clear boundaries, moments of pause, greater awareness of our emotional reactions, and a more compassionate stance towards ourselves can help us stay connected without disappearing into the old family dynamic. The system may continue to pull us towards what is familiar, but as adults we now have more freedom to decide how we want to take part in it. Perhaps the most important question is not whether we go home for the holidays, but which part of ourselves comes home with us when we do.

The full article was originally published on the Psychology Portal – Psychology.gr.

Related services

You can read more about related services:

                    Family Therapy

                    Parent Counseling

                    Individual Therapy

                    Couples Therapy

                    Greeks Living Abroad and Migration

The holidays often bring back far more than memories.
