Is There a Debt of Gratitude?

Gratitude towards our parents can be deep and genuine without becoming a lifelong debt. Many adults grow up with the feeling that they must somehow “repay” their family’s sacrifices through the choices they make in their own lives: pursuing a particular career, staying physically close to their parents, avoiding relationships or decisions they disapprove of, or constantly proving that they were worth everything that was done for them. This dynamic can be especially strong in immigrant families or more collectivist cultures, where love and gratitude may easily become entangled with obedience and self-sacrifice. The result can be an invisible “debt of sacrifice,” in which a person may have achieved everything their family hoped for and still feel that they are living a life they never truly chose.

Recognising this debt does not mean being ungrateful, nor does it erase what parents have given. It means separating love from obligation and gratitude from the loss of personal freedom. Acts of care and sacrifice retain their deepest value when they are not later used as leverage over an adult child’s choices. It is possible to love, honour, and respect one’s parents while still claiming the right to shape one’s own life. Perhaps the most mature form of gratitude is not to continue living the life others imagined for us, but to use what we were given to build a life that genuinely belongs to us.

The full article was originally published on the Psychology Portal – Psychology.gr.

Related services

You can read more about related services:

                    Individual Therapy

                    Family Therapy

                    Parent Counseling

                    Couples Therapy

                    Greeks Living Abroad and Migration

[303,305,308,306,301
532,322,383,368,506,446,357,349,439
post-10706","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-family-and-parenthood","category-grief-loss-and-life-transitions","category-mental-health-mental-disorders-and-resilience","category-relationships-and-communication","category-self-awareness-and-personal-development","tag-autonomy","tag-boundaries","tag-family-relationships","tag-gratitude","tag-guilt","tag-identity","tag-intergenerational-relationships","tag-parents","tag-systemic-psychology
["GET
