It can emerge when a relationship ends, a job is lost, the body changes, a sense of safety disappears, or the future we imagined no longer seems possible. In these experiences, we do not lose only something external; we may also lose part of our identity, our routines, and the story on which we had built our lives. From a systemic perspective, we grieve not only the person or situation that is gone, but the entire network of relationships, roles, habits, and meanings that existed around it. This is why non-death losses can be deeply painful, even when they are not socially recognised and the person is left to grieve quietly, without rituals, condolences, or a sense that their pain is fully legitimate.

Adapting to loss is neither linear nor something that simply “ends.” Grief often moves like a wave between contact with the pain and the effort to rebuild everyday life, while meaning-making helps us integrate what has been lost into a new understanding of ourselves and our lives. Moving forward does not require returning to who we were before, nor does it mean forgetting. It requires time, space, presence, and relationships that can stay with the sadness without trying to fix it. Loss can change our world permanently, but within that process, a more mature, more truthful, and different relationship with ourselves, with others, and with life can begin to emerge.

The full article was originally published on the Psychology Portal – Psychology.gr.

Related services

You can read more about related services:

                    Individual Therapy

                    Group Therapy

                    Couples Therapy

                    Family Therapy

                    Parent Counseling

                    Greeks Living Abroad and Migration

                    Organizational Psychology

Grief is not limited to death.
