Beneath this repetition may lie unconscious conflicts, fears of failure or rejection, and a deep need to maintain a sense of control. Familiar pain can feel safer than an unknown possibility, even when that possibility could be positive. Behaviours that appear self-destructive on the surface may therefore serve a very different purpose internally: protecting us from something that once felt even more threatening. Choosing an emotionally unavailable partner, postponing an important challenge, or sabotaging a relationship just as it begins to become meaningful can all be different expressions of the same attempt to avoid reopening an old wound.

Repetition, however, is not only connected to our psychological history. The brain learns through what we repeatedly experience, while stress can further reinforce familiar fight, flight, or freeze responses until they begin to feel almost automatic. Neuroplasticity also offers another possibility: what has been learned can gradually change through new and repeated experiences. Meaningful change, therefore, does not happen simply because we intellectually understand why we behave as we do, but because we begin to experience that another way of being is possible. Through the therapeutic relationship, as well as through safer forms of connection, a person can gradually learn to tolerate intimacy without sabotaging it, calm without anticipating danger, and love without constantly preparing for rejection.

The full article was originally published on the Psychology Portal – Psychology.gr.

Related services

You can read more about related services:

                    Individual Therapy

                    Group Therapy

                    Couples Therapy

                    Organizational Psychology

                    Greeks Living Abroad and Migration

[308,310,306,301
423,394,330,431,512,343,527,402,374,520
post-10689","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-mental-health-mental-disorders-and-resilience","category-psychology-of-everyday-life","category-relationships-and-communication","category-self-awareness-and-personal-development","tag-fear-of-rejection","tag-neuroplasticity","tag-procrastination","tag-psychological-trauma","tag-recurring-patterns","tag-self-sabotage","tag-self-awareness","tag-stress","tag-therapeutic-relationship","tag-unconscious
["GET
