When someone has grown up with emotional distance, control, neglect, or abuse, they may know exactly what they do not want to repeat without having a clear internal model of what warmth, safety, tenderness, and emotional availability actually look like. As a result, old patterns may return in different forms: through comparison, denial, perfectionism, excessive strictness, avoidance of the parental role itself, or the expectation that children should be “strong” and need very little. Dysfunction is not necessarily passed on because someone intends to cause harm, but because people often reproduce, outside their awareness, what they once learned about love, care, and relationships. “Like mother, like daughter” is therefore not simply imitation; it can be memory, attachment, and family history continuing to shape us even when we believe we have left it behind.

Change begins when these patterns become visible and stop operating automatically. Breaking an intergenerational cycle does not require a dramatic rupture so much as a gradual shift through self-awareness, self-compassion, new behaviours, and a greater capacity to hold both our own experience and our child’s at the same time. Awareness may initially bring shame, guilt, or regret, but it is also where the possibility of a different relationship begins. Small, consistent changes in the way we respond and communicate can create new experiences of connection and gradually reshape patterns that once felt inevitable. Our family history may explain a great deal, but it does not condemn us to repeat it. The cycle truly begins to change when we can see clearly what we carry, what we are reproducing, and what we are now choosing to do differently.

The full article was originally published on the Psychology Portal – Psychology.gr.

Related services

You can read more about related services:

                    Family Therapy

                    Parent Counseling

                    Individual Therapy

                    Couples Therapy

                    Group Therapy

[303,305,308,306,301
390,383,358,351,354,527,535
post-10671","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-family-and-parenthood","category-grief-loss-and-life-transitions","category-mental-health-mental-disorders-and-resilience","category-relationships-and-communication","category-self-awareness-and-personal-development","tag-behavioral-patterns","tag-family-relationships","tag-intergenerational-trauma","tag-parental-reflective-functioning","tag-parenthood","tag-self-awareness","tag-self-compassion
["GET
