Children can bring profound love, connection, purpose, and a sense of continuity, while also bringing exhaustion, financial pressure, lack of sleep, reduced freedom, and often greater strain on a couple’s relationship. The experience of parenting is strongly shaped by social and economic context: the level of support available, financial security, working conditions, family policies, and whether parents have a genuine “village” around them to help carry the demands of care. This is why the question of whether parents are happier than people without children has no simple or universal answer; the experience can vary enormously from one person to another and from one society to another.

Perhaps the deeper issue lies in how we define happiness in the first place. If happiness is measured only as everyday pleasure, parenthood may indeed appear to lower it, because it involves effort, worry, responsibility, and countless demands. But if we include meaning, connection, identity, growth, and the experience of loving someone in a way that changes how we relate to life itself, the picture looks very different. Children may not always make us happier in the simple sense of feeling good, but they can make life richer, more demanding, and at the same time more meaningful. Perhaps, then, the real question is not whether children bring happiness, but what kind of happiness we expect from life and whether happiness alone is enough to describe what parenthood can mean.

The full article was originally published on the Psychology Portal – Psychology.gr.

Related services

You can read more about related services:

                    Parent Counseling

                    Family Therapy

                    Couples Therapy

                    Individual Therapy

                    Group Therapy

[303,308,306,301
382,369,354,333,429,440,402
post-10667","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-family-and-parenthood","category-mental-health-mental-disorders-and-resilience","category-relationships-and-communication","category-self-awareness-and-personal-development","tag-family","tag-happiness","tag-parenthood","tag-parenting","tag-psychological-flourishing","tag-relationships","tag-stress
["GET
