Violence, aggression, and cruelty do not arise from a single cause, nor do they necessarily reflect fixed aspects of someone’s personality. The pursuit of personal gain, threatened ego, fear, anger, revenge, ideology, group influence, and social circumstances can push human behaviour far beyond where someone once believed they would go. Perhaps most importantly, people who cause harm rarely see themselves as “bad.” They often justify their actions, minimise their consequences, or construct a narrative in which they are the victims, the wronged party, or simply someone who was “defending” themselves.

The distinction between “good” and “bad” people may therefore be far more dangerously simplistic than it first appears. Human behaviour is shaped by a continuous interaction between biological predispositions, life experiences, relationships, cultural influences, self-control, and the circumstances of a particular moment. Empathy, compassion, and our capacity for human connection can act as protective forces, just as disconnection from others can make causing harm easier. The more meaningful question, then, may not be who is good and who is bad, but what moves us, at different moments and under different conditions, closer to one side or the other and how stable the line we believe separates them really is.

The full article was originally published on the Psychology Portal – Psychology.gr.

Related services

You can read more about related services:

                    Individual Therapy

                    Group Therapy

                    Couples Therapy

                    Family Therapy

                    Organizational Psychology

[301,308,310
362,508,371,337,341,461,524,482
post-10656","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-self-awareness-and-personal-development","category-mental-health-mental-disorders-and-resilience","category-psychology-of-everyday-life","tag-aggression","tag-empathy","tag-ethics","tag-human-behaviour","tag-human-nature","tag-personality","tag-self-control","tag-social-psychology
["GET
