Or Is It the Most Dangerous Myth We’ve Ever Believed?

The familiar saying “what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger” has become almost a cultural shorthand for resilience, yet the psychological reality is far more complex. Adversity does not automatically lead to growth, and trauma is not a form of character training. It can leave deep marks on self-image, relationships, a person’s sense of safety, and the way they respond to stress. Resilience does not develop simply because someone has suffered; it emerges from the interaction between what happened and the resources available around them — care, love, safe relationships, support, the opportunity to process the experience, and the meaning they are able to make of it. Some challenges can indeed help people develop skills and greater adaptability, but excessive or repeated adversity does not necessarily “toughen us up.” It can exhaust us, frighten us, or bring us to our limits.

Real psychological strength may not lie in coming out of every hardship “stronger,” but in being able to move forward without denying how deeply the experience affected us. Resilience is not rigidity or forced optimism; it is the ability to adapt, seek support, rebuild a sense of agency, and allow a painful experience to become part of our story without letting it become our entire identity. Pain, by itself, is not a teacher. What may ultimately transform us is what happens afterwards: the relationships that hold us, the care we receive, the meaning we create, the self-awareness we develop, and the gradual return to a life that does not need to prove its strength, but can simply remain fully human.

The full article was originally published on the Psychology Portal – Psychology.gr.

Related services

You can read more about related services:

                    Individual Therapy

                    Group Therapy

                    Organizational Psychology

                    Greeks Living Abroad and Migration

[301,305,308,310
474,430,312,431,335,527,372,448
post-10647","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-self-awareness-and-personal-development","category-grief-loss-and-life-transitions","category-mental-health-mental-disorders-and-resilience","category-psychology-of-everyday-life","tag-adjustment","tag-mental-health","tag-mental-toughness","tag-psychological-trauma","tag-resilience","tag-self-awareness","tag-therapy","tag-traumatic-experience
["GET
