Or Do We Simply Stop Listening?

Complaining often says far more than simply, “I don’t like this.” It can express dissatisfaction, powerlessness, a need for change, or a deeper wish to be heard and have our experience acknowledged. In relationships, families, workplaces, and everyday life, we do not always complain because we expect someone to solve the problem. Sometimes a complaint becomes a bid for connection, an indirect attempt to assert a need, a form of resistance, or simply a safer way of saying something we find difficult to express directly. This is why not every complaint needs advice in response. Behind “I’m exhausted,” “nothing ever changes,” or “I can’t do this anymore” may be a much simpler request: “Listen to me. Try to understand what this is like for me.”

The difficulty begins when complaining stops being a message and becomes a habitual way of relating to the world. When the same grievances are repeated without any possibility of movement, they can gradually reinforce helplessness, exhaust relationships, and organise a person’s identity around everything that feels wrong. The aim, then, is not to stop complaining or to label every negative feeling as “toxic,” but to become curious about the function our complaints serve within our relationships. Do they help us connect, speak up, and move towards change, or have they become a substitute for action? Perhaps complaints do not need to disappear. What matters is learning to hear what they are trying to tell us — and, more importantly, deciding what we do once we have listened.

The full article was originally published on the Psychology Portal – Psychology.gr.

Related services

You can read more about related services:

                    Couples Therapy

                    Individual Therapy

                    Family Therapy

[306,310
390,363,346,468,360,488,462,437
post-10597","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-relationships-and-communication","category-psychology-of-everyday-life","tag-behavioral-patterns","tag-communication","tag-complaining","tag-complaint","tag-interpersonal-relationships","tag-learned-helpness-2","tag-personal-growth","tag-systems-theory
["GET
