Consequently, tears are often accompanied not only by the emotion itself, but also by shame, fear of judgment, or the perceived need to explain why we were moved. Yet, crying does not solely express sorrow. It can arise from joy, relief, gratitude, anger, awe, or an unexpressed need for connection. When we constantly suppress it, we do not eliminate the emotion; we merely hinder its processing and amplify internal tension.

Healthy emotional crying can be a form of release and self-care, helping us recognise, tolerate, and process what we are feeling. Tears serve both an intrapersonal and interpersonal function: they can help regulate emotion, while also communicating a need for support, closeness, or understanding without words. The goal is not to cry more or less, but to be able to let emotion exist without shame and without automatically interpreting tears as weakness. Sometimes, allowing ourselves to cry is one of the ways we care for ourselves most honestly.

The full article was originally published on the Psychology Portal – Psychology.gr.

Related services

You can read more about related services:

                    Individual Therapy

                    Group Therapy

                    Greeks Living Abroad and Migration

[305,301
381,408,380,508,430,312,342,355
post-10586","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-grief-loss-and-life-transitions","category-self-awareness-and-personal-development","tag-crying","tag-emotional-expression","tag-emotional-suppression","tag-empathy","tag-mental-health","tag-mental-toughness","tag-self-care","tag-tears
["GET
