Some people find it difficult to say “thank you” because they have learned to take help for granted, because receiving makes them feel indebted, or because accepting someone else’s generosity brings them face to face with their own vulnerability. As a result, they may minimise what they receive, continually expect more, or gradually turn another person’s kindness into an unspoken obligation—often without recognising the emotional cost this creates within the relationship.

Ingratitude does not only hurt the person who gives; it can also isolate the person who struggles to appreciate what they receive, reinforcing dissatisfaction, loneliness, and the belief that no one truly cares. Giving needs awareness, reciprocity, and boundaries if kindness is not to become exhaustion or exploitation. Offering something because it reflects our values does not mean tolerating everything in return. It means knowing when to protect ourselves, recognising when a relationship has become one-sided, and remembering that another person’s inability to appreciate what we give does not diminish the value of our generosity.

The full article was originally published on the Psychology Portal – Psychology.gr.

Related services

You can read more about related services:

                    Individual Therapy

                    Group Therapy

[306,310
412,508,368,325,360,464,329,342
post-10560","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-relationships-and-communication","category-psychology-of-everyday-life","tag-emotional-exhaustion","tag-empathy","tag-gratitude","tag-ingratitude","tag-interpersonal-relationships","tag-personal-boundaries","tag-reciprocity","tag-self-care
["GET
