It is a form of emotional withdrawal used to punish, pressure, or control another person, undermining the sense of safety that close relationships need in order to thrive. The person on the receiving end can become trapped in a cycle of self-doubt, guilt, and overthinking, repeatedly searching for what they might have done wrong. With no explanation and no clear sense of when communication will resume, uncertainty itself becomes part of the emotional distress.

It is important to distinguish between taking healthy space and using silence as a form of punishment. Someone who genuinely needs time can communicate that need respectfully and make it clear that they intend to return to the conversation. But when silence becomes a repeated pattern of manipulation or emotional control, protecting our self-esteem, boundaries, and emotional wellbeing becomes essential—without taking responsibility for another person’s behaviour. The more important question is no longer, “How can I get them to talk to me?” but rather, “What do I need in order to protect my mental health and emotional safety?”

The full article was originally published on the Psychology Portal – Psychology.gr.

Related services

You can read more about related services:

                    Couples Therapy

                    Individual Therapy

                    Family Therapy

[307,306
416,410,430,470,464,440,529,455
post-10552","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-trauma-abuse-and-violence","category-relationships-and-communication","tag-emotional-abuse","tag-emotional-withdrawal","tag-mental-health","tag-passive-aggression","tag-personal-boundaries","tag-relationships","tag-self-esteem","tag-silent-treatment
["GET
