Often, it takes hold slowly and almost imperceptibly, through control, manipulation, gaslighting, isolation, and the gradual erosion of self-esteem. When someone spends a long time in an environment where their reality is constantly questioned, their needs are dismissed, and their choices are restricted, they may gradually lose trust in their own judgement and abilities. Leaving an abusive relationship, therefore, is rarely a simple decision. It is an extremely complex process shaped by fear, psychological and financial dependence, family responsibilities, uncertainty about the future, and the ongoing need to protect both personal and family safety and wellbeing.

Abuse does not exist only within the relationship between two people. It unfolds within a wider network of family, social, and cultural factors that can make the experience of being trapped even harder to recognize. The mechanisms of coercive control often operate quietly, gradually changing how a person sees themselves, others, and the choices available to them. Understanding these psychological processes, having access to a safe and supportive network, and recognizing that abuse extends far beyond physical violence are essential steps in helping someone gradually regain a sense of safety, trust in themselves, and freedom to make their own choices.

The full article was originally published on the Psychology Portal – Psychology.gr.

Related services

You can read more about related services:

                    Individual Therapy

                    Family Therapy

                    Couples Therapy

Domestic abuse does not necessarily begin with physical violence.
